Today, 6 September 2026, the world celebrates the first World Packaging Day, an international initiative led by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).
Packaging is much more than a container around a product. It is an essential part of the modern supply chain, protecting goods throughout storage, handling and transportation and helping products reach customers safely and efficiently.
The first World Packaging Day focuses on four main areas: Packaging for Progress, Packaging Against Food Waste, Packaging and Economic Growth, and Packaging and Sustainability.
From a logistics perspective, packaging plays an especially important role. Its dimensions, weight, materials and design directly affect warehouse space utilisation, handling operations, transport capacity, product protection, logistics costs and the environmental impact of the entire supply chain.
The challenge for the future is therefore not simply to use less packaging, but to develop better packaging.
Smarter design, recyclable and reusable materials, reduced weight and volume, and improved product protection can make supply chains both more efficient and more sustainable.
World Packaging Day is an opportunity to recognise an often underestimated element of logistics: behind every efficiently stored, transported and delivered product, there is also a packaging solution.
